What is gum surgery?

Gum surgery, also known as periodontal surgery, includes a range of procedures used to treat advanced gum disease and repair damage affecting the gums, bone, and supporting structures around the teeth.

While some patients can treat their gums with periodontal therapy, some cases are far too advanced and needs surgical support. While many cases of gum disease can be managed with scaling and root planing, some patients require surgical intervention when infection has progressed or significant tissue loss has occurred.

The goal of periodontal surgery is to eliminate infection, reduce periodontal pockets, restore healthy gum architecture, and preserve natural teeth whenever possible.

What are the types of periodontal surgery?

At Westmount Dental, we provide several surgical procedures and gum disease treatment designed to address different stages and effects of periodontal disease.

Pocket reduction therapy

As gum disease progresses, deep pockets of gum tissue form around teeth as bacteria accumulate, advancing into and destroying the supporting bone. By reducing pocket depth, this procedure removes the disease-causing bacteria, eliminates the deep pocket, and makes tooth surfaces more smooth.

Bone regeneration

Bone regeneration procedures regenerate lost bone and tissue supporting your teeth caused by periodontal disease. Membranes and bone grafting materials are used to encourage your body’s natural ability to regenerate itself in order to strengthen the support of the tooth.

Crown lengthening

Crown lengthening reshapes excess gum and bone tissue to expose more of the natural tooth structure. This procedure may be recommended for gummy smiles, uneven gum lines, teeth requiring restorative treatment, teeth with decay or fractures below the gum line, or cosmetic dentistry.

Why should I get gum surgery?

When performed at the appropriate stage of treatment, periodontal surgery can provide significant oral health and functional benefits.

Stop the progression of gum disease
Improve smile appearance
Preserve natural teeth
Reduce tooth sensitivity
Restore bone and gum support
