I know that my oldest two daughters can’t wait to head out into the streets tonight as a Vampire Queen and Pirate Princess. However, their father – the responsible dentist that he is – has already informed them that they can’t eat everything they collect.
While cavities cannot develop from one night of binge-eating on laffy taffy, jolly ranchers and chocolate, the sticky and chewy treats can get stuck in the deep pits and grooves of children’s teeth, putting your child at an increased risk of tooth decay.
I’d like to provide some tips for a tooth-friendly Halloween.
If you choose to hand out sweets, I always recommend sugar-free gum and candy.
A new trend is handing out temporary tattoos, stickers, or small inexpensive toys.
Avoid candies that take lots of time to dissolve, such as taffy and lolly-pops, so that you can reduce the amount of time sugar is in contact with teeth.
My wife and I always feed our kids before we head out with the hope that they eat less candy on a full stomach.
Offer to hold their bag of candy, and take some out for yourself when they’re not looking.
Limit the number of candy they are allowed to eat when they come home.
While they are sleeping, take some more for yourself. And if the kids ask where it went, deny any knowledge of its whereabouts.
And don’t forget to brush and floss before bed!
We hope that you have a great time tonight! Happy Halloween!
